Welcome From Head of School
Thank you for your interest in New Vistas School. We are a small school with a big mission: to foster academic and personal growth and to provide students with learning, attention, and emotional challenges an opportunity to reach their full potential.
Instructional Programming
In grades 3 – 12 we offer a full program of academics tailored to each child’s needs. Additionally, because we focus on the whole child, students are involved in social skills development, enrichment courses to encourage their unique interests and talents, and community service projects to promote service to others and the idea of giving back and paying forward.
Students who learn differently frequently experience challenges in acquiring reading and written language skills, such as students with dyslexia and dysgraphia, students with ADD/ADHD and organizational challenges, students with dyscalculia, students who are on the upper end of the Autism spectrum who struggle socially, and/or students who simply have not been successful in traditional classroom settings—all of these students have an opportunity for success at NVS.
Our Faculty
Our teachers serve students identified with a specific learning disability including dyslexia, ADD/ADHD, students who struggle with anxiety, and high-functioning Autism Spectrum Disorder (formerly known as Asperger’s Syndrome).
Many of our teachers have master’s degrees in special education, as well as degrees in their individual content areas. Several of our faculty members bring previous career experiences to the classroom, providing additional real-world applications to their lessons.
As a partner in education, New Vistas School works with Liberty University, University of Lynchburg, and Randolph College, to enable field study students, practicum and intern students, and student teachers in special education to observe and do practical studies on our campus. We are accredited by the Virginia Association of Independent Schools, licensed by the Virginia Department of Education.
Hands-on Learning
New Vistas School utilizes the Orton-Gillingham approach to learning in all subjects. Students learn by doing, not just “setting and getting.” STEAM team projects, tending the school garden, and venturing out “ beyond the walls” are all ways NVS students gain experiences that apply to their classroom work, and allow them to learn using their preferred learning modalities and styles.
The NVS Community
The New Vistas School building was originally a private residence and contributes to a warm, homey atmosphere. Due to our small size, students, faculty, and staff form a close-knit community. The members of our NVS community come from all over the central Virginia area, including the city of Lynchburg and the counties of Amherst, Appomattox, Bedford, Campbell, Halifax, Nelson, Pittsylvania, and Rockbridge.
New Vistas School is a special place filled with special people. I encourage you to come by and see the students and faculty in action — growing, learning, and supporting each other. We would be happy to meet you and your child and share with you how NVS puts the “special” in special education.
Best Regards,
Lori Eaglin
